An unflinching look at China’s one-child policy and its effect on its citizens, especially its women. Nanfu Wang serves as both director and narrator, using her own history to bring us into the film and to illuminate the policy and its draconian enforcement that led many families to take brutal steps in order to comply with the unbending regulations. The images can be disturbing, but the film’s focus on personal stories keeps you fully engaged.  

Nanfu Wang’s debut film, Hooligan Sparrow, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2016 and was shortlisted for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2017. Her second film, I Am Another You, premiered at SXSW Film Festival in 2017 and won two special jury awards. One Child Nation, won the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary Feature at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. 

 Jialing Zhang is an independent filmmaker based in Beijing. She is Co-Director and Editor of Complicit, which follows a benzene-poisoned Chinese migrant worker who takes on the global electronic manufacturing industry.
