Citizen K represents a deep dive into the strange case of one-time oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky, once believed to be the wealthiest man in Russia, who rocketed to prosperity and prominence in the 1990s, served a decade in prison, and became an unlikely leader of the anti-Putin movement. Narrated by Alex Gibney and brimming with insightful interviews with various Russian journalists, businesspeople, and legal experts, Citizen K plays like a political thriller, while providing insight into how power works in Russia.

Alex Gibney has nearly 50 film credits to his name, including this year’s The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley, a portrait of disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. Some of his award-winning or nominated films include: Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief, the winner of three Emmys in 2015; Taxi to the Dark Side, winner of the 2007 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature; and Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, nominated in 2005 for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. In 2016, Hamptons Doc Fest honored Gibney with our Career Achievement Award.
