On the 15th anniversary of the debut of Last Dance, Mirra Bank’s docu-mentary is as stirring and important today as it was when it hit the theaters. The film documents the creative collaboration between the American modern dance company, Pilobolus and the famed illustrator and writer of children’s books, Maurice Sendak. Together they create a dance-theater piece about the Holocaust.

The movie captures the step-by-step improvisational process of creating a work inspired by Sendak’s personal connection to the Holocaust. The conflicts between the three artistic directors adds another dimension to the telling of an emotionally wrought story.

Mirra Bank directs both film and theater. Last Dance was shortlisted for an Academy Award. Her innovative nonfiction feature, Nobody’s Girls, was a PBS primetime special. In 2014 she produced, directed and wrote The Only Real Game, a film about Manipur, a volatile border state in northeast India, that loves baseball. Bank is a lifetime member of the Actors Studio and serves on the Board of the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures.
