There are only a handful of editorial obituary writers in the world and none are better than those at The New York Times, where obits have become some of the best writing in journalism; documentary storytelling in print. The film invites some of the most essential questions we ask ourselves about life, memory and the inevitable passage of time. What do we choose to remember? What never dies?
Vanessa Gould got the idea for this film after Eric Joisel, one of the artists in her last film, Between the Folds, passed away at age 54. She wanted this solitary artist to have a final acknowledgement and so sent a short announcement to newspapers around the world. The Times picked it up and ran a beautiful obituary of him. Gould’s film, Between the Folds received a Peabody and has been screened at more than 45 international film festivals. She also produced and shot Years of Living Dangerously, a documentary series for Showtime about climate change.
